Deodorant Without Baking Soda: Why Baking Soda Can Irritate Skin — and the Gentle Alternative

In short: Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) makes many natural deodorants effective – but on sensitive skin it can trigger redness, itching or a burning sensation, because it is alkaline and disrupts the skin's natural acid mantle. If you react to it, you still don't have to go back to an antiperspirant: Senza is the FINE deodorant cream without baking soda – gentle with magnesium hydroxide, aluminium-free and still long-lasting.

Why is there baking soda in so many natural deodorants?

Sweat itself is almost odourless. The typical smell only develops when skin bacteria break sweat down. Baking soda shifts the skin's pH slightly towards alkaline – an environment in which odour-forming bacteria multiply less easily. That is exactly why baking soda is a popular, natural and highly effective active ingredient in deodorant creams: sweat still flows freely, but it does not smell.

For most people this is ideal. Some skin, however, reacts sensitively – and then this very strength becomes a problem.

Why baking soda can irritate sensitive skin

Our skin naturally has a slightly acidic protective mantle (a pH of around 4.5–5.5). With a pH of around 8–9, baking soda is distinctly alkaline. On robust skin this quickly balances out again. On sensitive skin – or with very frequent use, a freshly shaved underarm or already irritated skin – the alkaline ingredient can disrupt the acid mantle. Possible consequences:

  • Redness in the underarm
  • Itching or burning, especially after shaving
  • a feeling of tightness or minor skin irritation

Important: this is not an allergy in the classic sense and no sign that natural deodorant “doesn't work” – it is simply an individual sensitivity to the ingredient baking soda.

The alternative: deodorant cream without baking soda

A deodorant without baking soda has to keep odour-forming bacteria in check another way. In Senza, that job is done by magnesium hydroxide – a gentler, mineral active ingredient that sensitive skin generally tolerates far better. In addition, Senza deliberately does without essential oils, which can be another possible trigger for irritation.

The result: the same reliable protection, but without the ingredient that causes the irritation. That makes Senza the right choice for sensitive skin, for the transition phase with an irritated underarm – and for anyone who wants completely unscented odour protection.

How do I know whether I don't tolerate baking soda?

A simple clue: if redness or itching appears mainly shortly after application, or gets worse after shaving, baking soda is a likely trigger. It's worth a test: switch to a deodorant cream without baking soda for two weeks. If the symptoms disappear, you have your answer. As always with persistent skin reactions: stop using the product and seek medical advice.

Frequently asked questions
