Aluminum-Free Deodorant: How aluminum salts work — and how to go without

In short: Antiperspirants with aluminum salts constrict the openings of the sweat glands, thereby reducing sweating itself. Aluminum-free deodorants like FINE work differently: they allow natural bodily function and instead neutralize the bacteria that cause body odor in the first place. Two active principles — one conscious decision.

What do aluminum salts actually do?

The active ingredient in classic antiperspirants is usually aluminum chlorohydrate. It forms gel-like complexes on the skin that temporarily close the sweat gland ducts — simply put, less sweat reaches the skin surface. This reliably prevents wetness but interferes with a natural bodily function: sweating regulates our body temperature.

A side effect that many people are familiar with: in combination with sweat, aluminum salts can leave the typical yellowish stains on light-colored clothing.

What does science say about safety?

Here we are honest — even if it might sound more convenient for a natural cosmetics brand: the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) updated its assessment in 2020 based on new studies. According to this, aluminum absorption through the skin is significantly lower than previously assumed; the BfR considers health impairments from daily use of aluminum-containing antiperspirants to be unlikely (BfR statement no. 030/2020 of July 20, 2020, bfr.bund.de). The EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) also assessed aluminum in cosmetics as safe in the usual concentrations in 2020.

The decision for an aluminum-free deodorant is therefore not a question of fear — but a question of principle: Do I want to suppress a bodily function, or do I just want to prevent the result — the odor?

How FINE works without aluminum

Sweat itself is almost odorless. The typical odor only arises when skin bacteria decompose it. This is exactly where FINE comes in:

  • Baking soda (or gentle magnesium hydroxide in our "Senza") changes the skin's environment in such a way that odor-forming bacteria are neutralized — sweat flows, but it doesn't smell.
  • The rich shea butter base cares for the skin and ensures that the effect lasts up to 24 hours — even during sports and in heat.
  • Alcohol-free: no burning, even immediately after shaving.
  • 100% natural ingredients, vegan and cruelty-free — developed in Berlin, produced in small batches in Germany and Austria.

Who benefits from switching?

  • For everyone who wants to allow sweating as a natural function and only prevent the odor.
  • For people with sensitive skin who react to alcohol and synthetic additives — for baking soda sensitivity, Senza is the right choice.
  • For everyone who is tired of yellowish stains on light-colored clothing.
  • During pregnancy and breastfeeding, if certain ingredients are to be consciously avoided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I sweat more with an aluminum-free deodorant? You sweat as much as your body intends — an antiperspirant has suppressed this until now. After an adjustment period of 1-2 weeks, the skin feeling settles down. More on this in our transition guide.

Does it really work all day? Yes — the deodorant cream lasts up to 24 hours due to its rich fatty base, even with movement. Our format comparison shows which format suits you.

How do I recognize a deodorant without aluminum? A look at the INCI list: If "Aluminum Chlorohydrate" or similar is listed there, it is an antiperspirant. At FINE, you will find the complete INCI list transparently on every product page.
